Dean Altobelli - Lansing
Dean Altobelli is a Principal at Miller Canfield where he handles lawsuits in federal and state trial courts and appellate courts. He represents businesses, government agencies and other organizations dealing with legal disputes, including matters arising out of both private business dealings and government action. After writing an amicus brief in the Michigan Supreme Court on an issue of major significance to Michigan law, the television news media turned to Dean as an authority on the legal issues involved and for an opinion on the legal and political consequences of the court’s decision.
Mr. Altobelli attended Michigan State University where he graduated with high honors; Top one percent of class; Michigan Association of Governing Boards, outstanding Student; Academic All-American Football, 1985, 1986; Toyota National Leader of the Year in College Football, 1986; National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete; Rhodes Scholar Finalist in Michigan; Ray Meyer Award for Excellence; Big Ten Medal of Honor.
He has a large body of work including:
- Defense of one of the country's largest wine and spirits distributors against tortious interference with business relations and antitrust claims involving statewide distribution rights.
- Defense of a global learning and training outsourcing services company against breach of contract and fraud claims arising from professional consulting contract.
- Defense of global bakery company against fire suppression system compliance claims at major production plant.
- Defense of county against negligence, nuisance, inverse condemnation and trespass claims involving environmental contamination, including appeals involving governmental immunity.
- Defense of paper and tissue manufacturing company against air emission and water discharge violation claims brought by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
- Defense of major recycler of organic residuals in disputes involving product liability, personal injury and regulatory compliance claims. Representation of national wholesale food distributor in disputes with retailers.
- Defense of national mortgage lender in real estate and mortgage industry disputes.
- Representation of Michigan bank in professional appraisal services negligence case. Representation of municipal retirement system in professional actuarial negligence case.
- Representation of municipalities in MI Supreme Court amicus briefing concerning constitutional and statutory powers of cities to approve installation of pipelines in city territory.
- Defense of city in territory dispute with another municipality involving annexation procedures.
- Defense of city and major university in construction contract disputes.
Mr. Altobelli is involved with the American Bar Association, American Inns of Court, Ingham County Bar Association, Michigan Defense Trial Counsel: Regional Chair, State Bar of Michigan, and The Federalist Society.
